09.09.2026 | 15:04

American Jessica Pegula has booked a US Open semifinal spot against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, BelTA has learned.

In the quarterfinals, Pegula defeated fellow American Emma Navarro in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. At the start of the final eight, Aryna Sabalenka also overcame Czechia’s Linda Noskova in a three-set thriller, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 7-6 (10-7). Prior to this match, the world No.1 had not dropped a single set to her opponents, defeating Colombia’s Camila Osorio (world No. 59) 6-2, 6-4, Russia’s Polina Iatcenko (No. 160) 6-1, 6-1, Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova (No. 92) 6-3, 6-4, and American Taylor Townsend (No. 96) 6-4, 6-3.

Two more matches for a spot in the semifinals will take place today, 9 September. World No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will face China’s Qinwen Zheng. If Rybakina triumphs, she will snatch the No. 1 ranking from Sabalenka, snapping the Belarusian’s 99-week streak at the top. In another quarterfinal match, American Coco Gauff will compete against Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva.

Aryna Sabalenka has made three straight US Open final appearances: after falling to Coco Gauff in 2023, she bounced back in the next two finals to defeat fellow Americans Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova. In 2019, Sabalenka and Belgium’s Elise Mertens won the doubles title, defeating Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Australia’s Ashleigh Barty in the final. In singles, Victoria Azarenka reached the final three times (2012, 2013, 2020) but never managed to lift the trophy.

The season’s final Grand Slam tournament will conclude in New York on 13 September. The total prize money for the 2026 US Open stands at a record $108 million, with the men’s and women’s singles champions taking home $5.5 million each. In 2025, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz captured the men’s singles title.
