Lukashenko suggests experiment for improving sandy soil fertility

10.03.2026 | 13:25

The president pointed out that some fields in Belarus are located on hills and contain sandy soil. This is why the head of state suggested staging an experiment that may increase the quality of these fields. Trying to mix organic fertilizers with peat and potash salt waste is the idea. Such a step may increase the fertility of the lands that are suboptimal for agriculture.

«I’ve been thinking we should try using a layer of waste from potash salts, a layer of organic fertilizers, a layer of peat, and mix all of them. What will happen? I guess it can’t get worse. After all, part of the potash fertilizers will stay there. Plow over them, then apply peat and organic fertilizers,» Aleksandr Lukashenko said. «It will definitely be an improvement for the soil. But it is necessary to experiment to find out whether it is economically justified. I am ready to observe. We should look at some suboptimal field and try it in some spot. We may resolve the problem of the mounds [of potash salt waste] around Soligorsk.»

Speaking about peat fertilizers, the president mentioned the People’s Republic of China as an example. China buys peat in Belarus and uses it as a fertilizer for bad soil: «They transport it for thousands of kilometers... They understand that it will be recouped.»
