Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko attended a parade to mark the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, which is taking place in Red Square in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko arrived in Red Square together with President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The Belarusian head of state, along with other leaders, took his place on the central stand next to veterans.

After the military parade Aleksandr Lukashenko and the heads of delegations laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin walls to honor the memory of those who fell in the Great Patriotic War.

The celebrations to mark the 81st anniversary of the Victory in Moscow were also attended by the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Laos, and the supreme ruler of Malaysia.

Aleksandr Lukashenko arrived in Moscow on a working visit on 8 May. On the eve of the celebrations in honor of the anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Belarusian head of state held negotiations with President of Russia Vladimir Putin. During the meeting the Belarusian leader spoke about the significance of the holiday and called the Victory a great legacy.

«It is kind of an achievement of ours. Back in the day our ancestors saved not only Europe but the whole world from the brown plague. It is clear what would have happened to us if our predecessors had lost this war. This is our great legacy. We proceed from that. It is the legacy of Russians, Belarusians, and all the republics of the Soviet Union. Everyone fought (even if the war did not reach everyone) and died by the tens, hundreds, and thousands,» Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Upon his return to Minsk, the president will take part in the festive events that will be held in the Belarusian capital city.
