Expert outlines key steps to reach 3% annual GDP growth in Belarus

02.09.2026 | 11:00
First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus Aleksandr Yegorov spoke about how Belarus can achieve annual GDP growth of 3% in an interview with the First News TV channel, BelTA has learned.

According to Aleksandr Yegorov, the GDP growth target for 2026 is 2.8%. In addition, the Belarusian People’s Congress has set a target of achieving average annual growth of 3%. Aleksandr Yegorov outlined what is needed to reach this figure.

Today, the head of state has set several tasks for all of the country’s economic agencies, including increasing Belarusian companies’ share of sales on the Russian market and diversifying exports by selling goods to a wider range of countries. «It is impossible to achieve average growth of 3% over the five-year period without fulfilling these tasks. And it is not enough simply to go to other countries and sell our goods. Our goods must be competitive,» he stressed.

He explained that competitiveness depends on the development of high-tech sectors such as IT and biotechnology, and the most efficient use of domestic resources, including land and forests, and the development of production based on local raw materials. «We also need to make decisions faster, avoid red tape, reduce production costs and, most importantly, be ready to take responsibility. And the most important thing is to work more efficiently. We need to work faster, better and with higher quality than people in other countries. Take the IT sector, for example, which has flourished thanks to decisions made by the head of state. This is ultimately the key to success,» Aleksandr Yegorov said.

He emphasized that GDP is not an abstract figure in Belstat’s monthly reports, but a direct reflection of how people live. «Today, the old mechanisms of simply increasing output no longer work. To meet the target and grow by an average of 3% annually, our economy needs to operate much more efficiently and confidently embrace new global trends: introduce artificial intelligence, digital services, advanced automation, and biotechnology,» he said.

Aleksandr Yegorov added that there was no need to think of anything new to do this. «We already have a solid foundation that has proven its reliability. The Belarusian agricultural and industrial sector ensures food security and generates stable export revenues, while the advanced IT sector creates high added value. By combining modern technologies with our traditional strengths, we will be able to produce truly competitive goods, reduce their cost and confidently sell them both to Russia and to the Global South. Economic stability and the well-being of every Belarusian are not given to us from somewhere. They are created through daily efficient work at our workplaces. GDP ultimately depends on each of us,» he stressed.
