But the more excuses there are, the more absurd it sounds. A reasonable question arises: why make excuses for a potential terrorist at all? Could it be because the Polish elites have deliberately flooded their country with radical elements? They had hoped to use them to destabilize Belarus, but ended up with security threats on their own soil. And now the burning question is how to sell this to the Polish public, which is already reeling from xenophobic tensions?
The story of the planned terrorist attack in Poland should be examined in two dimensions: through the prism of politicians and intelligence services. The Polish elites, apparently, are interested in sweeping the matter under the rug. Otherwise, they would have to publicly admit that Warsaw effectively invited radicals into their country and lost control over them. All the Polish elites’ narratives about external enemies lose meaning when it becomes obvious that the enemy is within and entered through the front door.
At the political level, there are practically no comments. The only exception is that Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Warsaw is carefully studying the information received from Belarus. However, spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maciej Wewiór flatly refused to comment on the information about the preparation of the terrorist attack.
Meanwhile, the Polish intelligence services took the tip from their Belarusian colleagues into consideration. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister-coordinator of special services, assured journalists that Polish special services «never downplay alarming signals and treat all information about potential threats with the utmost seriousness and determination.»
There was a similar reaction last year when Belarus warned the Poles about the approach of drones. While the Polish elites played silent, the military expressed gratitude. «This preliminary warning was useful to us. To be more precise, our reaction was positive,» Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army General Wiesław Kukuła said noting that he did not expect him to receive help from Belarus, given the tense situation on the border.
Everything that politicians deliberately stayed silent on was spelled out in the pages of Poland’s pro-government media. They tracked down the main «hero» of the story, who by and large confirmed the information provided by the Belarusian side. The threats did occur and were directed at the underage children of an activist living in Poland who holds Belarusian citizenship. The motive was revenge for the revocation of the «hero’s» right to reside in Poland. Why the competent authorities of Poland decided to expel him from the country and what exactly they discovered is a separate question.
However, on the pages of the Polish media, the story has been somewhat reinterpreted. «The post was written at a moment when its author was emotionally reacting to the decision of the Polish authority to revoke his refugee status... He is in a very difficult emotional state,» Polskie Radio 24 appealed for compassion.
«One emotional message was enough to spark a political storm,» wrote the Polish outlet Kresy24
While Polish media sympathized with the «desperate» man, seeing nothing more than a «cry for help» in his threats, another piece of news broke. This time, a Polish citizen threatened to kill Ukrainian leadership on social media. He too said he acted «on emotions».
«The man explained to the police that he acted under the influence of emotions and regrets what he did,» reported Polish radio RMF24 on 30 July. «The actions he is accused of are punishable by up to three years in prison. The proceedings are being conducted under the supervision of the district prosecutor’s office in Muszyna.
Find the differences, as they say. Both spoke out on social media, both talked about murder, both expressed remorse and cited emotions. One was met with sympathy, the other was to be imprisoned.
Of course, how to respond and what decisions to make in a given situation is an internal matter for Poland. Belarus, as a responsible international actor, upholding its obligations in the fight against terrorism, and simply guided by moral principles, human life, especially children’s lives, comes above all, has fulfilled its duty by informing Poland about the preparation of a terrorist attack.
Guided by the same principles, in September 2025, Minsk informed Warsaw about the approach of drones. Incidentally, at that time, the Polish side also informed Belarusian combat duty units about unidentified aircraft approaching the Belarusian border from Ukrainian territory. In Minsk, such an exchange of information was called an important component of ensuring security, contributing to building confidence and strengthening security.
Unfortunately, the situation in our region remains tense. Alongside military threats, there are threats of terrorism, arms trafficking, drug trafficking, and migration problems. All of this requires close cooperation, at the very least between intelligence services and military departments.
Belarus is already demonstrating that, despite political disagreements, Minsk is ready for constructive interaction and for the role of a responsible regional partner. We would like to believe that our neighbors also realize that security must be a top priority and that any politicization of this issue is unacceptable.
