The Belarusian Railways plans to modernize its rolling stock fleet, Head of the Belarusian Railways Valery Verenich told journalists, BelTA has learned.

«We are purchasing 100 freight cars and 30 passenger cars this year. The manufacturer expects the first batch of 15 passenger cars to be delivered by 1 September for service on the Minsk—Moscow line,» he noted, adding that the rolling stock meets modern comfort and safety standards, featuring a range of passenger amenities.

The current freight car fleet is fully capable of meeting economic demands for both domestic and international cargo shipping.

Infrastructure maintenance is also moving forward, focusing on the track superstructure as well as signaling, centralized control, and interlocking systems. On the telecommunications front, the strategy involves not just replacing equipment, but introducing entirely new frameworks for data transmission architecture.

The Belarusian Railways has carried 28 million passengers so far in 2026, with roughly 45% utilizing digital channels, such as the mobile app and self-service kiosks, to buy tickets. A milestone initiative was the launch of cross-border rail links between Belarus and Russia on 2 April. Efforts are now focused on connecting Smolensk not just to Orsha and Vitebsk, but also extending lines from Mogilev and Gomel to adjacent Russian regions. Valery Verenich emphasized that these cross-border routes are popular far beyond just the local population.

Railway workers are celebrating their professional holiday today, as trains continue to be one of the most affordable transport options for Belarusians. More than 190,000 passengers rely on the country’s rail network daily. Moving forward, the Belarusian Railways is focused on strategic goals such as boosting transit speeds, enhancing passenger comfort, rolling out new freight services, expanding its destination map, and optimizing logistical models.
